Choosing The Right Digital Camera Memory Card

By Tom Sitas, October 8, 2009

With today’s more powerful digital camera memory cards, you can take and store more photos of your friends and family members than ever. But shopping for that first memory card can be a bit overwhelming because there are so many options available. Fortunately, with just a bit of research, and a close look at your photography habits, you can quickly find the right digital camera memory card for you.

The key to finding the right card lies in taking a close look at exactly how you use your digital camera. Some amateur photographers bring out their digital cameras for every occasion, big and small. Others only use it for the biggest of big events.

If you fall into the first category, you’ll want a memory card for digital camera with as much memory as possible. If you fall into the latter, you can get away with buying a less expensive card that doesn’t hold as many photos at a time.

The more memory, the more photos you can store on your digital camera memory card at a time. This is important if you like to snap shots throughout the entirety of birthday parties, graduations, weddings and other big events. If you simply like to take a handful of photos and then put your mini digital camera away, a memory card with less memory should be fine.

Of course, you will eventually have to get those photos off your digital camera memory card and into your computer. If you habitually make this transfer after every event you shoot, then you might not need a digital camera memory card with as much memory. If you tend to procrastinate, and leave transferring your photos from camera to computer until the last minute, you’ll prefer a digital memory card with more memory.

If you need more guidance, talk to the salesperson at your local electronics or camera store. This person can point out those memory cards that are recommended by photographers and those that work well with your particular camera model.

Buying a digital camera memory card doesn’t have to be a chore. Simply take a close look at the way you use your camera. This will give you more than enough clues to purchase the perfect memory card for your needs.

The Importance Of Digital Camera Memory Cards

By Tom Sitas, September 23, 2009

When shopping for a digital camera, consumers all too often fail to pay attention to one important accessory: the digital camera memory card.

A memory card is one of the most critical pieces of your digital photography arsenal. It’s the one piece of equipment that determines exactly how many photos you can take a time. That’s why it’s so important to research digital camera memory cards before you purchase them.

The sad truth is that most digital cameras come packaged with memory cards that boast low amounts of storage. This means that you’ll quickly eat up all the space on your memory card. This is especially true if you’re attending a long event that you want to capture on film.

You don’t want to waste all the storage space on your digital memory card before the big event hits its halfway point, right? To prevent this from happening, you must make sure to buy a digital camera memory card that’s powerful enough to hold many photos.

Most photographers can get away with purchasing one 256-megabyte memory card or two 128-megabyte cards. These digital memory cards will generally have more than enough storage options for any shutterbug operating a 3- to 5-megapixel digital camera.

Of course, if you have a more advanced digital camera, you may need digital memory cards that feature even more storage.

You may want a digital memory card with more capacity, too, if you’re the type of photographer who procrastinates when it comes to downloading photos to your computer. The more memory your card has, the fewer times you’ll need to clear the pictures off it.

The good news is that today’s photography and electronics stores carry a wide variety of digital camera memory cards. It’s easy for everyone from the novice to the professional-level digital photographer to find the card that suits his or her needs.

Just remember: Don’t shortchange yourself when it comes to memory. You don’t want your digital camera memory card to run out of space right before your niece blows out her birthday candles or your son holds out his hand for his high school diploma.
